Having a hard time Falling Asleep? Or Staying Asleep?
Is one worse than the other?
Only half of all Americans can say
each morning, "I had a good night's sleep." Are you among
the 50% who don't sleep well?
Having a hard time
FALLING asleep or STAYING asleep?
Getting a good night sleep is a growing
problem! Sleep is when the body repairs and strengthens
itself? It is when we release our growth hormones that make
us feel young and healthy. Sleep problems are typically a
result of chemical imbalances, caused by a go-go lifestyle,
stress and poor diet.
The typical recommendations for falling
asleep such as NO caffeine, no television or work in the
bedroom, turn all lights off and keep it quite are
great...and most people do that and still aren’t falling
asleep, which tells us there is more going on that needs to
be addressed.
A good night’s sleep is more than counting
sheep. When we begin to look at the biochemistry of our
body -- we can easily see why so many people are having a
hard time falling asleep, as well as, those who can’t STAY
asleep.
Stress can be the
root of your problem, because it stimulates your brain
activity!
Can’t fall
asleep?
If your life is always on the go and you
can’t fall asleep it could be because your adrenal glands
are over-producing adrenaline, due to stress, which
stimulates your mind and keeps you from falling asleep.
Your constant “fight or flight” lifestyle triggers your body
to produce more stimulatory neurotransmitters (brain
messengers). This excites and stimulates your brain and
prevents you from falling asleep.
How can you
expect to fall asleep if you just released a bunch of
chemical brain messengers that stimulate the brain?
Back in the old days, after a hard days
work, when the sun went down, there wasn’t a lot we could do
except read or talk with the family. Basically our body
would begin to unwind and relax as the sun went down. As we
begin to slow down the body would begin to produce
“inhibitory” neurotransmitters (chemical brain messengers).
In essence, all of the ‘stimulatory’ NT
(neurotransmitters) that were being produced during the day
would begin to dwindle down. While at the same time, the
‘inhibitory’ NT would begin to increase so you could unwind,
relax get a good night’s sleep.
However, with the advent of the internet,
cell phones, text messaging, video games and all night
television, people are constantly being stimulated
throughout the day AND night. This causes the body to
produce more of its ‘stimulatory’ NT, which is where the
imbalance begins. The overproduction of stimulatory NT can
NOT be offset or balanced out by the ‘inhibitory’ NT. This
causes the chemical imbalance and is the main reason you
can’t fall asleep at night. The body simply can’t produce
enough inhibitory NT to balance out all the stimulatory
brain messengers.
Think about it? As evening and night time
approaches… do you begin to unwind with your
activities? Or, is that when you do your internet
searching? Return e-mails? Text message? Video games?
Work? Are you doing things that stimulate your brain?
If so, this causes your body to produce more dopamine,
norepinephrine and adrenaline, which are stimulators!
They’re like a shot of coffee, which is going to make it
harder to fall asleep.
Treating the Cause…
Sleeping pills and other sleep aids only
manipulate the various neurotransmitters (chemical brain
messengers) to help you fall asleep. In essence, they
merely ‘knock you out’…they manipulate what little GABA and
serotonin your body is producing. Serotonin and GABA are two
powerful inhibitory NT, which help us relax, unwind and fall
asleep. Rather than taking drugs, a better alternative
would be to deal with the cause, while at the same
time, increase the production of the calming
neurotransmitters, GABA and serotonin.
Neuro Calm,
sometimes referred to as the natural “chill pill,” is
specifically formulated to increase both GABA and
serotonin levels. This not only helps with falling asleep,
but is a wonderful way to help those who might also be
suffering from mood swings, anxiety and depression.
Can’t stay asleep?
This is a sign that your diet (blood
sugar) is a sugar problem -- on top of an adrenal problem!
There are millions of people who have no
trouble falling asleep. However, they are having trouble
staying asleep. They wake up in the middle of the night and
can’t fall back asleep, because their mind is ‘racing.’
These people have a similar problem to
those who can’t fall asleep. The only difference is that
they also have a dietary component that needs to be
addressed...blood sugar.
Again, Stress is at the bottom of both of
these problems, because stress causes an increased
production of dopamine, norepinephrine and adrenaline,
which are produced by the adrenal glands. The more
stress we have in your life, the more you keep pumping
those adrenal glands! Finally, you reach a point where
your adrenal glands become exhausted and fatigued. When
this happens, you now have a harder time regulating your
blood sugar.
Blood sugar is critical in the sleep
process, because as it drops while you are asleep, the body
is designed to release cortisol to help balance blood
sugar. This keeps the brain happy, because the primary fuel
for the brain is sugar (glucose or carbohydrates) and as it
drops the brain is unable to function properly. This is
why some of the obvious symptoms associated with blood sugar
imbalances are mood swings, irritability, inability to focus
and concentrate, ADD, (take the online health quiz to
measure how stable you are keeping your blood sugar).
This is important to emphasize...when your
blood sugar drops…your brain takes priority over everything
else! If cortisol isn’t available to stabilize your blood
sugar, your brain will call upon its backup system to raise
blood sugar. The backup response is the release of
adrenaline. This causes the blood sugar to rise, which
makes the brain ‘happy’ and allows it to function properly.
The only problem is your body had to use adrenaline to
stabilize your blood sugar and adrenaline is a ‘stimulatory’
brain messenger. Now you’re over-stimulated and can’t go
back to sleep!
Fixing the problem…
To overcome this problem you have to pay
attention to your diet! Dinner should have an adequate
amount of both protein and good fats. This will help keep
the blood sugar stabilized for a longer period of time. If
you have a late night snack, It can NOT be anything with
refined sugars or flours. Try eating half of a
NatraLean Health Bar
and hour or so before bed. This will help keep your blood
sugar stable over several hours. You can try eating some
whole fruit -- this may also help. But you can NOT make your
last meal or snack one that is high in carbohydrates,
especially carbohydrates that have a high glycemic rating
(see glycemic
chart).
Secondly, we need to be helping our body
produce more of the inhibitory NT to balance out all the
stimulation that is going on in our life. This is where
Neuro Calm becomes very affective. It will help you sleep
better, by helping your brain to produce more of the calming
messengers.
FYI…all the over-stimulation of our
adrenal glands can deplete and exhaust them, which is
why it is important to nourish and support the adrenal
glands.
Adrenal-Fuel
will help support your tired adrenal glands, which are
instrumental in controlling blood sugar. Many customers use
the AM-PM Stress
Recovery Program, which incorporates the use of both
Neuro-Calm and Adrenal-Fuel. These products work
synergistically to restore proper function.
So, if are struggling with sleep issues,
mood swings, anxiety or depression -- try the
AM-PM
Stress Recovery Program! It includes both Adrenal
Fuel and Neuro Calm. Adrenal Fuel is typically
taken in the morning and at lunch, to control your stress
hormones. That’s the ‘AM’ portion. Neuro Calm is taken on
an empty stomach, usually before dinner and bedtime, which
is the ‘PM’ aspect.
Neuro-Calm™ is
